Several surgical techniques are grouped under the generic name of Bariatric Surgery, all targeted to reduce the food intake capacity of the patient and to alter the intestinal path to reduce the absorption of fat and other components during the digestive process.
Two different surgical types can be applied to successfully accomplish weight loss:
1) RESTRICTIVE: aims to reduce food ingestion capacity. This category includes the following techniques:

2) COMBINED RESTRICTIVE AND MAL ABSORPTIVE: in addition to stomach and food-intake reduction, the intestinal absorption of some compounds (fats and carbohydrates) can be altered. These techniques are:

Duodenal switch
The most common procedure is the Gastric Bypass. While the other two (Biliopancreatic Diversion and Duodenal Switch) are reserved for cases of extreme morbid obesity.
